No referendum on banning casino and slot hall operations to be arranged in Komi
The election committee of Komi refused to register an initiative group for arranging a republican referendum on banning casino and slot hall operations within the region from April 2nd, 2008. The regular session of the republican election committee took place on September 25th, reports “KomiInform”.
The initiative group`s meeting minutes and its registration application were submitted to the election committee of Komi in August. The elective committee of the Komi Republic looked through the documents at its summer session and did not reveal any legal drawbacks in their execution. In compliance with the law, the election committee submitted the documents to the republican State Council, which was to verify the appropriateness of the issue raised by the initiative group.
The deputies of the State Council of Komi decided that the question proposed for the referendum is contrary to Federal Law “On major guarantees of election rights and the RF citizens` right to participate in referendums”. As the State Council deputies gave a negative resolution, the referendum will not take place.
